Episode 19–Editor and Author Ally Bishop

In Episode 19 of the WRITER 2.0 Podcast I speak with editor and author Ally Bishop from Upgrade Your Story.

In the interview, we discuss:

  • what happens in an MFA program for writers;
  • the difference between line editing and concept or story editing;
  • why you need to find an editor;
  • her funniest agent story;
  • the best ways to find a freelance editor and how to avoid getting scammed.

Plus, on Today in Writing: the birthday of William Gaddis.

About Our Guest:

profile-photoAlly Bishop went to Wilkes University and earned an M.A. and M.F.A. in creative writing and publishing. Since then, she’s been editing, writing, organizing writing groups and readings, and immersing herself in the writing environment every time she has an opportunity. She is a freelance editor at Upgrade Your Story and at Booktrope. She’s also the host of the Upgrade Your Story podcast. She just published a short story called MADAME CHRISTMAS on Amazon.

  1. Great interview! It’s cool to see Ally Bishop on the other side of the mic, I’ve enjoyed the Upgrade Your Story Podcast for over a year now, and through her Facebook page, have now been turned on to YOUR podcast, as well. Double bonus for me! As a writer, it’s always great to hear about the lives, trials, triumphs, and personal thoughts about this wicked life we’ve been called to.

    Thank you both for another insightful podcast, and A.C., I certainly intend to listen to more of your podcasts now. The cycle continues, Wu-Tang, Wu-Tang. Also, I cannot accredit myself to being any sort of Chef, but I’ve worked in the food industry for most of my life, and have the word “Food” tattooed on my arm (instead of “Mother”). There’s … reasons … for that. Just another thing to, uh … have in common. Yeah!

    Thanks,
    Victor Giannini
