French 75 (Our Favorite Cocktail)

[yumprint-recipe id=’2′]I discovered this drink in the bar at the Mark Hopkins Hotel during the SF Writers Conference. It was so delicious that I made it the drink of choice of Camila Gray, one of the lead characters in my novel.

The origin of the French 75 is up for debate, but the meaning of the name isn’t. The combination of gin and champagne has such a kick that it felt like being shelled with the powerful French 75mm field gun.

A note about this recipe. Gin and champagne are two things that, when good, are very good. But cheap versions can leave you feeling terrible. I recommend drinking only one or two of these a year, when you feel like spending a bit extra for good champagne and gin. New Year’s Eve, perhaps?

  1. You had me at French 75 — one of my all time favorite cocktails! In fact, we will be serving a version of it at our New Years Party! Look forward to more blog posts from you!

    1. Thanks! Wish we could be at the party, but we had a prior plan. Now that I know there will be French 75s there, I’m even more bummed we can’t make it. Do you have any special twists you put on the recipe?

  2. Thanks for reminding me of this cocktail! My husband and I discovered the French 75 on a weekend away a number of years ago, and then had a party where we served these to a whole bunch of friends. Will have to make them again soon!
